Starting today, WhatsApp will indicate which messages you receive have been forwarded to you.

According to the press release from Whatsapp, the new feature was designed to make one-on-one group chats easier to follow as it helps determine if your friend or relative wrote the message they sent or if it came from someone else originally. Since the announcement yesterday, it would appear that the news hasn’t been too well received as many would opine that they would prefer that the other party not know that the message being sent is in fact, forwarded but as one BellaNaija reader rightfully put it, the copy and paste option is still available.

The blog post went further to say:

WhatsApp cares deeply about your safety. We encourage you to think before sharing messages that were forwarded. As a reminder, you can report spam or block a contact in one tap and can always reach out to WhatsApp directly for help.

To see this new label, you need to have downloaded the latest supported version of WhatsApp onto your phone.

The feature is one of a number of changes WhatsApp is making to improve group discussions and address the challenge of viral content and the spread of false news.
